WINDING HOUSE, KIMBERLEY, 2022

Sitting on shifting soils, the Winding House was a workhorse in Kimberley’s mining industry. Today, its brickwork unravels. The project looks into strategies in reusing the ruin for a future programme. New masses occupy the chambers. They extend over the existing walls to protect them from further erosion. A glass line instates a new weather line, set against the existing walls and extending to connect the three chambers. The staircase climbs the cavern between the masses like an insect moving between the old and new.
