SPECIAL QUARTERS, LANGA, CAPE TOWN, 2019
Commissioned by the City of Cape Town, this design research proposal formed part of a heritage tourism feasibility study for the redevelopment and adaptive re-use of two derelict remnants of Langa’s migrant labour housing units, known colloquially as ‘Special Quarters.’ Set against the backdrop of a new housing proposal, this proposal attempts to revitalize these two small structures – tectonically, with a ‘kit-of-parts’ type approach to community engagement and skills transfer – and programmatically, as a base to support small enterprises in a growing township tourism industry.
